The Savannah Symphony is no more, a victim of the same economic and demographic challenges facing orchestras in small-to-mid-sized cities all over the United States. But carrying on their proud tradition—and using many of the same musicians—is the Savannah Philharmonic (800/514-3849, www.thesavannahphil.org), a professional troupe that performs concertos and sonatas at various venues around town and is always worth checking out.
A prime dance company in town is Savannah Danse Theatre (912/897-2100, www.savannahdansetheatre.org), known chiefly for its complete Nutcracker performance each December at the Lucas Theatre, with live accompaniment by a full symphony orchestra hired especially for the occasion—quite a rarity in a city this size.
