Pronounced “wit marsh,” this overwhelmingly residential area is on the way from the city of Savannah to Tybee Island’s beaches. For our purposes here, it’s notable for the presence of two outstanding barbecue joints, right across U.S. Highway 80 from each other.

Wiley’s Championship BBQ (4700 U.S. Hwy. 80 E., 912/201-3259, www.wileyschampionshipbbq.com, lunch Mon.–Sat. 11 a.m.–3 p.m., dinner Wed.–Thurs. 5–8 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 5–9 p.m., $8–25) has what is already widely considered the best pulled pork in Savannah. In addition—and unusually for this area—they smoke a mean brisket, too. Save room for the great sides, such as mac & cheese and sweet potato casserole.
Papa’s Bar-B-Q (4700 U.S. Hwy. 80, 912/897-0236, www.papasbar-b-que.com, Mon.–Wed. 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Thurs.–Sat. 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun. noon–9 p.m., $6–15) has a very wide-ranging menu in addition to its signature pulled pork sandwiches, including shrimp, tilapia, and flounder cooked in a variety of ways, and cold plates including chef, shrimp, and chicken salads. Their house barbecue sauce is very smooth and a clear cut above the generally poor quality sauce in this area.
