Museo de Arte Contemporeano

Housed in a beautifully renovated colonial home, the Elisa Burkhard Contemporary Art Museum-Gallery (Calle Yajalón 2, no phone, www.museoelisa.wordpress.com, 3–6 p.m. Tues.–Sun., free) is a welcome addition to San Cristóbal’s nascent modern-art scene. Three large exhibition rooms feature photography, sculptures, and paintings, most by local and expatriate artists.

The gallery also has open-air sculpture and garden areas, a small café, workshop, and a projection room in the works.

Galería Studio Cerrillo

Galería Studio Cerrillo (Calle Tonalá 19-A, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Tues.–Sun., best to call ahead) is a one-room modern-art gallery at Sol y Luna Guest Inn (Calle Tonalá 27 at Calle Pichicalco, tel. 967/678-5727, www.solylunainn.com). It hosts an oft-changing lineup of installation and performance pieces, many by international artists.

Galería de Arte Fotográfico Albertina

Located just steps from the central plaza, the Galería de Arte Fotográfico Albertina (Av. Insurgentes 1-A, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. and 4–8 p.m. Mon.–Sat., free) is a one-room affair with regularly changing photo exhibits. It has a great little gift shop with Chiapanecan artesanía, paintings, and framed photos of local scenery and people. A sculpture garden in the adjoining courtyard is planned for 2010.
