Museo del Ámbar de Chiapas
The Chiapas Amber Museum (Ex-Convento de la Merced, Parque La Merced, Diego de Mazariegos near Matamoros, tel. 967/678-9716, www.museodelambar.com.mx, 10 a.m.– 2 p.m. and 4–7 p.m. Tues.–Sun., US$2) has an extensive, beautiful collection of raw and sculpted amber of various colors and qualities. There are displays on its sources, its use in pre-Hispanic societies, and how to distinguish it from glass and plastic imitations.
There’s also a Spanish-language video at the end that, although somewhat garbled, provides a fascinating look into how amber is mined and sculpted.
Signage is in Spanish only but guidebooks to the exhibit are available in English, Italian, German, French, and Japanese—ask for one at the ticket booth.
