Playa del Sol sees surprisingly few visitors, especially considering it’s just two kilometers (1.2 miles) east of Puerto Arista, and easier to get to than Boca del Cielo. A broad scenic beach, Playa del Sol is ideal for beachcombing and long lazy walks, or just relaxing on the sand watching fishermen pull their boats ashore to unload the day’s catch. Like everywhere along this coast, the surf can be quite rough here; take care wading or swimming.

A clutch of beachfront palapa restaurants serve fresh seafood for virtually identical prices, around US$5–10 for a large plate. Mary Mar, on the right-hand side where the access road hits the beach, has hammocks and a small clean wading pool—great for kids when the surf is high. A few sandy lots to the left, El Navigante is another good choice, with a friendly proprietor. Camping is allowed (and free) at most of the palapas here, provided you eat there, and includes use of the bathrooms and showers, if they’ve got them.

Getting to Playa del Sol

To drive to Playa del Sol from Puerto Arista, head back toward Tonalá about two kilometers (1 mile) to the Boca del Cielo turnoff; turn right and continue about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) to the village of Cabeza de Toro, where there’s a sign and turn-off to Playa del Sol about halfway through town. A well-marked turnoff leads another 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) to the beach.

You can also catch one of the ATV taxis that trundle up and down the beach between Puerto Arista and Playa del Sol (US$3 pp), or rent one yourself in either place (US$10/hr).
