Parque La Esperanza
Tonalá’s central square is spacious and lively, shaded by palm and mango trees, and a hub for school kids, businesspeople, and travelers alike. Look for a tall stone monolith; it’s a stela depicting Tlaloc, the Aztec god of rain and fertility, found at the nearby Horcones archaeological site.
Casa de Cultura
Halfway between Parque La Esperanza and the bus station, Tonalá’s Casa de Cultura (Av. Hidalgo btwn. Calles 15 de Mayo and Miguel López Negrete, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.–Fri., free) houses a modest archeological museum, with a small number of artifacts from Iglesia Vieja and other archaeological sites in the area, plus a collection of work by the noted Chiapanecan ceramicist Rodolfo Disner.
