Spanish is the official language and the language of commerce. In the tourist sector, it’s not unusual to find English speakers, but it’s better to gain a working knowledge of Spanish than to depend on finding them. Even if your linguistic skills are limited, making an effort earns goodwill and respect.
While Spanish is nearly universal, many indigenous Chileans are bilingual or even multilingual.

The major language study institutions are in Santiago, but there are also possibilities in Valparaíso, Pucón, and other cities.
