Valparaíso is home to a horde of crafts, flea, and antiques markets. The most commercial is Muelle Prat’s Feria de Artesanías, at the foot of Plaza Sotomayor.
Valparaíso has two main flea markets, one on Plaza Radomiro Tomic, the median strip dividing the lanes of Avenida Argentina, which includes mostly cheap manufactured goods but also some indigenous crafts, and the more structured Feria Persa Barón, where Avenida Argentina becomes Avenida España toward Viña del Mar.
On Plaza O’Higgins, on weekends and holidays, the Feria de Antigüedades y Libros La Merced is an extraordinary but expensive antiques and book market comparable—except for the lack of tango—to the famous Feria de San Telmo on Buenos Aires’s Plaza Dorrego. Casa Lacazio (Independencia 1976, tel. 0322/255111) is a permanent antiques outlet.
Bookstores
Librería Crisis (Av. Pedro Montt 2871, tel. 0322/218504) offers a good stock of used books on Chilean history and literature. For local maps and local guidebooks, try Librería Ivens (Plaza Aníbal Pinto 339).
