Trip Ideas
The most economical choices are Residencial Tekena Inn (Atamu Tekena s/n, tel./fax 0322/100289, tekenainn [at] entelchlile [dot] net, US$15 pp) and Residencial Ana Rapu (Apina Iti s/n, tel./fax 0322/100540, www.anarapu.cl, US$25/35 s/d), which is even cheaper if you camp in the garden (US$10 d).
The affable HI affiliate Residencial Kona Tau (Avareipua s/n, tel. 0322/100321, hieasterisland [at] hostelling [dot] cl, US$15–20 pp) has 16 beds in dorms and other rooms with greater privacy, and provides free mangos from its garden. The lower rates are for HI members, the higher ones for nonmembers.
Not bad for the price, but a bit out of the way, Residencial Tahai (Atamu Tekena s/n, tel. 0322/100395, www.aotour.cl, US$25/40 s/d with breakfast) has had mixed reviews. There is also camping (US$5 pp) in the lush subtropical gardens.
Comparable places include Residencial Vai Kapua (Te Pito Te Henua s/n, tel./fax 0322/100377, vaikapua [at] entelchile [dot] net, US$25/40 s/d), Residencial El Tauke (Te Pito Te Henua s/n, tel. 0322/100253, US$20 pp), and Residencial Tahiri (Ara Roa Rakei s/n, tel. 0322/100570, kontutty [at] hotmail [dot] com, US$25/40 s/d), which also organizes elaborate Rapanui earth oven meals.
Surfers congregate at Residencial Apina Tupuna (Av. Policarpo Toro s/n, tel. 0322/100763, apinatupuna [at] 123mail [dot] cl, US$25 pp), which could use some upgrading. Camping in its palm-studded garden costs US$10 per tent. Residencial Vinapu (Av. Tu’u Koihu s/n, tel. 0322/100393, US$25 pp) is similar.
