Staying at Residencial Mahina Taka Taka Georgia (Tahai s/n, tel. 0322/100452, riroroco [at] hotmail [dot] com, US$30 pp) is a real Polynesian experience, almost like being adopted into Lucía Riroroko’s family. Though it falls well short of luxurious, the rooms are spacious, and its slightly out-of-town location, in a wooded setting near Ahu Tahai, is a bonus.

In a quiet area uphill from the church, Casa Napohe (Ara Roa Rakei s/n, tel. 0322/551169, helgathieme [at] entelchile [dot] net, US$45/60 s/d) has modest but decent bungalows with kitchenettes.

Cozy, central Hotel Orongo Easter Island (Atamu Tekena s/n, tel./fax 0322/100294, US$40/60 s/d) is a cozy five-room garden hotel. East of the church, the newish Hostal Puku Rangi Uka (Puku Rangi Uka s/n, tel. 0322/100405, pukurangiuka [at] entelchile [dot] net, US$35/65 s/d) has plain rooms but some attractive common spaces.

Though perilously close to Hanga Roa’s Mormon missionary church, Hotel Chez Joseph (Avareipua s/n, tel. 0322/100373, fax 0322/100281, US$41/65 s/d) enjoys a hilltop location with fine views from its front porch and spacious bedrooms with cool tile floors.

In a quiet location at the northern Tahai sector, longtime stalwart Residencial Chez Cecilia (Atamu Tekena s/n, tel./fax 0322/100499, www.rapanuichezcecilia.com, US$40/70 s/d) also offers garden camping (US$9 pp). Across from the museum near Ahu Vai Uri, Cabañas Pikera Uri (tel. 0322/100595, pantu [at] entelchile [dot] net, US$40/70 s/d) enjoys splendid isolation.

The management can be brusque at Tahai’s Chez Goretti (Atamu Tekena s/n, tel./fax 0322/100459, US$40/70 s/d), but its 13 rooms enjoy a quiet setting among expansive subtropical gardens, and the main building, with a central dining room and other common spaces, is a treasure.

Nearby, appealing Hotel Vai Moana (Atamu Tekena s/n, tel./fax 0322/100626, US$50/70 s/d) has lustrous common spaces and larger, better appointed rooms than others in its price range.

The exceptional Aloha Nui Guest House (Atamu Tekena s/n, tel./fax 0322/100274, haumaka [at] entelchile [dot] net, US$45/75 s/d) has sizable rooms with private bath in a lush garden setting. Hosts Ramón Edmunds and Josefina Mulloy, a granddaughter of the pioneering archaeologist William Mulloy, manage English, German, and Spanish well, and operate a variety of excursions.

Around the corner from the Mercado Artesanal, Hotel Poike (Petero Atamu s/n, tel. 0322/100283, fax 0322/100366, US$50/75 s/d) is also a very decent choice. Set among spacious lawns, Hotel Gomero (Tu’u Koihu s/n, tel. 0322/100313, fax 0322/551662, www.hotelgomero.com, US$59/78 s/d) has sizable rooms, a pool, and other attractive common areas.

Just uphill from the church and across from the hospital, rooms at Hostal Martín y Anita (Simón Paoa s/n, tel. 0322/100593, www.hostal.co.cl, US$50/80 s/d) come with a substantial breakfast, private bath, and air-conditioning. The owners handle English well.

Its ample rooms embellished with Rapanui carvings, family-run Hotel Taura’a (Atamu Tekena s/n, tel. 0322/100463, www.tauraahotel.cl, US$80 d) serves an Australian-style cooked breakfast—with real coffee—and has fine new baths with up-to-date appliances such as hair dryers.

Near Caleta Hanga Roa, the Rapanui-French Residencial Tadeo y Lili (Av. Policarpo Toro s/n, tel./fax 0322/100422, tadeolili [at] entelchile [dot] net, US$60/80 s/d) has cabaña-style accommodations with breakfast; the attractively decorated main house has a good library on island themes, though much of it is in French. The owners also offer two-, three-, or six-night packages with full board and excursions, and can manage French, English, or Spanish.

Though older and rather dark, Hotel Topara’a (Hetereki s/n, tel. 0322/100225, easterisland [at] hawaii [dot] rr [dot] com, US$65/80 s/d) is quiet and enjoys ocean views from atop a knoll south of Caleta Hanga Roa.

Across from the airport, Hotel Manutara (Hotu Matua s/n, tel./fax 0322/100297, www.hotelmanutara.cl, US$63/97 s/d) ranks highly in both service and facilities, including a pool.

Centrally located Hotel Manavai (Te Pito Te Henua s/n, tel. 0322/100670, fax 0322/100658, www.hotelmanavai.cl, US$68/98 s/d) has beautiful veranda rooms facing subtropical gardens that reflect its name (“sunken gardens” in Rapanui), as well as a small pool and an outdoor bar. It is, however, perilously close to sound waves from the Toroko disco.

In a quiet zone near the airport, Hotel Hotu Matua (Av. Pont s/n, tel. 0322/100242, fax 0322/100445 US$60/100 s/d) features 55 large, comfortable rooms, a swimming pool, and sprawling subtropical gardens.
