General Health Maintenance
Common-sense precautions can reduce the possibility of illness. Washing hands frequently with soap and water, and drinking only bottled, boiled, or carbonated water help diminish the likelihood of contagion for short-term visitors—though Chilean tap water is potable almost everywhere.
Where purified water is unobtainable, pass drinking water through a one-micron filter and then purify it with iodine drops or tablets (but avoid prolonged consumption of iodine-purified water). Nonpasteurized dairy products, such as goat cheese, can be problematical.
