West of Villa Cerro Castillo, the Carretera Austral climbs above the Río Ibáñez valley before veering south to Lago General Carrera and the lakeside hamlet of Bahía Murta, one of the best areas to see fall colors. Murta’s also the gateway to Puerto Sánchez, 23 kilometers south, for boat trips to the Cavernas de Mármol, a series of small islands opposite Puerto Río Tranquilo’s Capilla de Mármol.
From early November to late March, Murta’s Oficina de Información Turística (5 de Abril s/n) keeps long hours.
Accommodations and Food
There are a several simple in-town accommodations, including Hostería Lago General Carrera (Av. 5 de Abril 647, US$6.50 pp) and Residencial Patagonia (Pasaje España 25, US$6.50 pp); the latter has a new and convenient branch at the highway junction (US$7.50 pp), with good beds, a small museum, and squeaky floors. All use the same community telephone (tel. 067/419600) and charge around US$2.50 more for breakfast.
