Coyhaique has a growing number of bars, but so far their aspirations surpass their appeal. Piel Roja (Moraleda 495, tel. 067/236635), for instance, has pizza and pub grub, psychedelic decor that probably infringes Fillmore copyrights, and a 7–9 p.m. happy hour, but something’s lacking. Despite its pioneer-style house, swinging doors, pistols on the wall, and cold beer on tap, Bar West (Bilbao 110, tel. 065/210007) serves mediocre pisco sours and plays too much insipid pop music.
The liveliest place is El Cuervo (General Parra 72, tel. 067/215015), a karaoke bar and wireless Internet hotspot. Peña Quilantal (Baquedano 791, tel. 065/234394) sometimes showcases live folkloric music but is just as likely to offer run-of-the-mill pop.
Cine Coihaique (Cochrane 321) shows occasional recent films.
At the Feria Artesanal de Coyhaique, on the west side of the Plaza de Armas, local horse gear is the main attraction, supplemented by wood carvings and woolens. Amancay (21 de Mayo 340, tel. 067/216099) has custom chocolates.
