Friendly Hospedaje Jorgito (Moyano 943, tel. 02902/491323, US$6 pp, US$17 d) has good multibedded rooms with shared or private bath. Just south of the bus terminal, the basic Hostel Buenos Aires (Ciudad de Buenos Aires 296, tel. 02902/491147, buenosaires [at] cotecal [dot] com [dot] ar, US$7 pp) has an improved facade and common areas.

New in 2005, the I Keu Ken Hostel (Pontoriero 171, tel. 02902/495175, www.patagoniaikeuken.com.ar, US$10 pp with breakfast) is a purpose-built hostel in the Magellanic style, with inviting common areas. All rooms are quadruple dorms, with lockers and shared baths; rates include breakfast. It’s a bit uphill from downtown, but transfers from the bus terminal are free.

Tidy Posada Patagónica Nakel Yenu (San Julián 244, tel. 02902/493711, US$11 pp with breakfast) is another hostel of recent vintage.

Among the best in its nonhostel class, family-run Hospedaje Alejandra (Espora 60, tel. 02902/491328, US$20 s or d) has smallish but spotless rooms with twin beds and shared bath.
