Except on Sunday, when the city is as dead as the cemetery, there’s usually something to do.
Punta Arenas has one surviving cinema, the Sala Estrella (Mejicana 777, tel. 061/241262).
El Templo (Pedro Montt 951, tel. 061/223667) is a dance club. The Olijoe Pub (Errázuriz 970) has the feel of an upscale English pub and reasonably priced drinks, but music can get a little loud for conversation. The Sara Braun mansion’s basement Taberna Club de la Unión (Plaza Muñoz Gamero 716, tel. 061/617133) is popular on weekends.
El Santino (Av. Colón 657, tel. 061/710882, www.santino.cl) is a spacious, informal pub where everyone feels welcome; there’s also food, but it’s not the star. With its techno ambience, Urbano Lounge (O’Higgins 568, tel. 061/224044) has an exclusive, even pretentious feel; again, the food plays second fiddle to the bar.
At the north end of town, Makanudo (El Ovejero 474, tel. 099/6492031) has 7–10 p.m. happy hours weekdays except Friday, and live music Friday and Saturday nights from around 1:30 a.m.
North of downtown, the Club Hípico (municipal racetrack) fronts on Avenida Bulnes between Coronel Mardones and Manantiales. Professional soccer matches take place at the Estadio Fiscal (stadium), a few blocks north at Avenida Bulnes and José González.
