Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino

During Ushuaia’s early days, convict labor built a short-line, narrow-gauge steam-driven railroad west into what is now Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego to haul the timber that built the city. A few years back, commercial interests rehabilitated the roadbed to create an antiseptic tourist version of the earlier line that ignores its unsavory aspects to focus on the forest scenery of the Cañadon del Toro.

The train leaves from the Estación del Fin del Mundo (tel. 02901/431600, www.trendelfindelmundo.com.ar), eight kilometers west of Ushuaia at the municipal campground. October–mid-April, there are three departures daily; the rest of the year there are only one or two. The two-hour-plus excursion costs US$18 per person in tourist class, US$35 per person in first class, and US$75–100 per person with a buffet lunch or dinner.

Round-trip transportation from Ushuaia costs US$5 per person with Remiscar (San Martín 995, tel. 02901/422222). Passengers can also use the buses from Ushuaia to Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego.
