Having undergone substantial restoration, the classic Hotel Huildín (Centenario 102, tel. 065/671388, www.hotelhuildin.cl, US$13–16 pp with breakfast and shared bath) once again deserves consideration.

Set on spacious grounds with fruit trees and a gazebo, the seaside Hospedaje La Esmeralda (Irarrázabal s/n, tel. 065/671328, www.esmeraldabythesea.cl, US$9–13 pp with shared bath, US$15–28 pp for more spacious rooms with private bath and in-room heating) is a backpackers’ favorite; it’s adding several more rooms with private baths and even dedicated Internet service. An elaborate breakfast costs US$3; other meals—salmon dinners and on-the-beach curantos—are also available, along with rental bikes, a rowboat and fishing gear, and boat tours of the vicinity.

Chonchi’s seafood restaurants include El Trébol (Irarrázaval s/n, tel. 065/671203) and La Quila (Andrade 183, tel. 065/671389). Los Tres Pisos (O’Higgins 359, tel. 065/671433) serves sandwiches, empanadas, and kuchen.
