For real budget meals, nothing’s better than the seafood at the numerous comedores in the Mercado Municipal (Prat and Errázuriz)—avoid the fried fish, though. It’s also a good place to purchase fresh produce and groceries, as is Supermercado Las Brisas (Mackenna 1150), whose Kaffeestube (tel. 064/230262) serves inexpensive sandwiches and lunches.
Upstairs from its namesake bakery, Pastelería Rhenania (Ramírez 977, tel. 064/235457) serves sandwiches and pastries, with separate tobacco-free seating. Dino’s (Ramírez 898, tel. 064/233880) also specializes in sandwiches and light meals, along with its franchise rival Bavaria (O’Higgins 743, tel. 064/231302). Bocatto (Ramírez 938, tel. 064/238000) has similar offerings but also pizza and Osorno’s best ice cream.
The Club Alemán, also known as the Deutscher Verein (O’Higgins 563, tel. 064/232784), reflects the German community’s significance more in name than in menu, which is fairly standard Chilean. The Club de Artesanos (Juan Mackenna 634, tel. 064/230307) is a labor-union restaurant with a good Chilean menu.
Chung Hwa (Matta 517, tel. 064/233445) serves Cantonese food, while Del Piero (Manuel Rodríguez 1081, tel. 064/256767) works at pizza and pasta. In the historic Casa Conrado Stückrath, La Parrilla de Pepe (Mackenna 1095, tel. 064/239653) lacks ambience but serves fine meats cooked to order and has diligent service.
