Trip Ideas
Puerto Varas has less nightlife than might be expected in a town with so much tourist traffic. It has filled what was once an unsightly vacant lot with the equally unsightly and pharaonically oversized Casino de Puerto Varas (Del Salvador 21, tel. 065/346600), filled with roulette wheels and slot machines.
Far better, though, is Garage (Walker Martínez and Santa Rosa), a low-key bar (alongside the Copec gas station) that was once an auto repair shop. La Veta (San Pedro 418) is also popular for drinks.
Commemorating the city’s 1854 founding, the Aniversario de Puerto Varas lasts two weeks in late January and early February. Soon thereafter, painters from around the country display their work at the Concurso de Pintura El Color del Sur.
