Before 1995, the country had just two courses: the championship course at Meliá Cariari and Country Club outside San José, and the nine-hole Hotel Tango Mar, overlooking the Gulf of Nicoya on the Pacific coast. However, the country is in the midst of a course-building binge and now claims half a dozen championship courses, with more coming.

The prime courses include a Robert Trent Jones Jr. stunner at the Paradisus Playa Conchal, at Playa Conchal, in Nicoya; the Marriott Los Sueños course at Playa Herradura, in the Central Pacific; Los Delfines Golf & Country Club, at Playa Tambor, in Nicoya; Parque Valle del Sol, at Santa Ana, west of San José; the Arnold Palmer–designed course at Four Seasons, at Bahía Culebra, in Nicoya; and the championship course at Hacienda Pinilla, also in Nicoya.

Contact the Costa Rica National Golf Association (tel. 506/2291-2161, www.anagolf.com) for information.

There are also numerous nine-hole courses.
