Cuba is riddled with caverns, and caving (spelunking) is growing in popularity, organized through the Sociedad Espeleológica de Cuba (Calle 9na, esq. 84, Havana, tel. 07/881-5802, http://sec1940.galeon.com), which also has a climbing division (c/o Anibal Fernández, Calle Águila #367, e/ Neptuno y San Miguel, Centro Habana, tel. 07/862-0401, anibalpiaz [at] yahoo [dot] com).
Many climbing routes have been established in Viñales. Climbing routes are open and no permission is necessary.
Cuban-American climber Armando Menocal (U.S. tel. 307/734-6034, www.cubaclimbing.com) is a good resource. Fernández and Menocal’s superb Cuba Climbing (www.quickdrawpublications.com) guidebook is indispensable.
