Restaurant Vizcaya (San Juan Bosco, Av. San Martin 42 and Dr. Delgado, tel. 809/686-2466, 10 a.m.–12 a.m. daily, US$2–15) is in the San Juan Bosco area (near the presidential palace), down the street from the government offices. This 45-year-old Spanish restaurant is a Santo Domingo institution. It is a favorite lunch spot of locals, government officials, and businesspeople.
The entrance to the restaurant is lined with the memorabilia of the “good ol’ days” when a filet mignon cost only 90 pesos (roughly US$2.50) and makes you long for the juke box to work again, but it is the food that has kept people coming back since the days of Trujillo. The menu is huge and the seafood is what they do very well, specifically the cosido and the octopus dish, pulpo a la gallega. They also serve tapas, grilled meats, rice dishes, pastas, sandwiches, and wonderful desserts.
