Ruinas del Hospital San Nicolás de Barí

A few blocks south of the Monasterio de San Francisco are the Ruinas del Hospital San Nicolás de Barí (Calle Hostos). They are the ruins of the first hospital built in the New World. The order to build came in 1503 by Governor Nicolás de Ovando. The design is in the classic form of a Latin cross, and it fared better than the monastery despite enduring the same catastrophes. Then in 1911 it suffered dire damage at the hands of a hurricane, forcing it to be felled as it was deemed a hazard to pedestrians.
