Not many options exist in the area as far as satisfactory low-budget accommodations. These moderately priced alternatives could work, though.
Portofino Guest House (Puerto Plata, Av. Hermanas Mirabal 12, tel. 809/586-2858, fax 809/586-5050, US$28 d) has 20 comfortable rooms that are kept very clean and come with a private hot-water bathroom, cable TV, and air-conditioning. The pleasant garden is shady and has a refreshing pool. You are a short walk from the beach.
Hotel Montesilva (Puerto Plata, Calle La Estancia, tel. 809/320-0205, US$35 d) is a good value. It’s on a quiet street and offers clean rooms with comfortable beds. All have a private hot-water bathroom, fan, and cable TV. Not all have balconies.
Centrally located Hotel Victoriano (Puerto Plata, Calle San Felipe 33 at Restauración, tel. 809/586-9752, US$28 d) gives clean rooms and is within walking distance of many restaurants. It’s a backpacker’s favorite. Rooms have fan or air-conditioning and cable TV.
