The Cocolos Festival, held on June 29, is also the feast of St. Peter and St. Paul and is a perfect time to view the customs and traditions of the cocolos immigrants, the sugarcane field workers for the industry in the late part of the 19th century. Their African heritage is preserved through the vibrant, multicolored, mirrored costumes worn by the guloyas (dancers), who roam around the city streets performing the traditional dance to furious drumbeats—as the rum flows, of course.
