It might be quite a stretch to call this the Napa Valley of the Dominican Republic, but Neyba is indeed wine country. Locals sell big jugs of the often sour wine made from regional grapes not only in the town of Neyba, but on road side stands along the carreteras of this region. Neyba has a nice Parque Central and is a small town with no sights, but it makes for a good spot to stop for a bite to eat on your loop around Lago Enriquillo. The Parque Central also serves as a pit stop for guaguas.
Accommodations and Food
Hotel Restaurant Babey (Calle Apolinar, US$10 d), across from the Parque Central, offers small rooms with fan or air-conditioning (you’ll pay extra). It’s rather clean and very basic. The restaurant, which is down a long corridor from the sidewalk, serves comida criolla at very low prices. The dish of the day (rice and beans and some kind of meat) is about US$2.
