There are several museums that highlight Key West’s role in treasure-hunting history, and the most interesting is the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum (200 Greene St., 305/294-2633, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. Sat.–Sun. and holidays, $12 adults, $10.50 students, $6 children).
In addition to several excellent exhibits of antiquities and artifacts from slave ships and colonial treasure vessels—including quite a bit of actual treasure—there’s also a substantial focus on the archaeological role that wreck divers play.
By giving this material a context beyond the glimmer of gold doubloons, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum is far more engaging and educational than one would expect.
