The Abyss

From the Abyss, you can look down one of the rim’s steepest drops to the river, nearly 4,500 feet. The drainage below the Abyss leads to Monument Canyon. With binoculars or sharp eyes, you might be able to spot the Monument, a pillar found in the depths of this tributary.
If you enjoy the thrill of heights, walk west along the Rim Trail for especially vertiginous views. Pima Point is three miles farther; Hermits Rest is four miles. If the shuttle is running, you can catch a later bus at either point.
