About 800 years ago, this small village was home to the Cohonina, one of the prehistoric cultural groups that lived in the Grand Canyon region. The people who built this multiroom pueblo tended crops nearby in addition to hunting game and gathering wild plants for food, fuel, and medicine.

The masonry complex includes living spaces, a storage area, and two kivas, or circular structures. The San Francisco Peaks, sacred to many of the area’s indigenous cultures, are visible through the surrounding ponderosa pines.

Rangers guide daily walks of the ruins, although you can take the self-guided loop trail if a ranger program isn’t scheduled while you are here.

Displays at nearby Tusayan Museum focus on prehistoric and contemporary Native American cultures. Artifacts include split-twig figurines found in Grand Canyon. The bookstore selection includes titles on archaeology and ethnology.
