Lomo del Macho

If you wish to go farther into the reserve, guides can take you on single- or multiday hikes to such places as Lomo del Macho, eight kilometers down a trail crisscrossing the mountains on the fringes of the biosphere reserve. There are two smaller waterfalls along the way, one of which forms a pleasant swimming hole. The trail continues to the trail’s namesake mountain ridge, where you have a breathtaking view of the forested slopes of the rugged mountain chain at the heart of this biosphere reserve. Horses are available for rent at about $4, but they can take you only part of the way, as the trail eventually gets quite steep and narrow.
