Nineteen kilometers west of Cobán is the Poqomchi’ Mayan town of San Cristóbal Verapaz, set beside Lake Chicoj. The Holy Week festivities here are similar to those in Antigua, with processions and the making of colorful sawdust-and-flower petal carpets.
The Museo Kitanamit (tel. 7950-4039, cecep [at] intelnet [dot] net [dot] gt, $1), run by the local Centro Comunitario Educativo Pokomchi (CECEP), features exhibits on the Poqomchi’ way of life, including art, textiles, and tools used in everyday life.
The organization also runs the Aj Chi Cho Language Center(www.ajchicho.50g.com), which teaches Spanish and Poqomchi’.
