An alternative base for exploring Candelaria Caves National Park and the nearby ruins of Cancuén is the small town of Raxrujá, a few kilometers east of the “Cruce del Pato” Junction.
Among the basic accommodations found here are Hotel Cancuén (tel. 7983-0720, www.cuevaslosnacimientos.com), on the edge of town, with basic rooms for $10 d or more modern tiled-floor rooms with TV, air-conditioning, and private bath for $15 d. The Restaurante Tu Casa next door serves good meals and is well staffed.
Another dining option is found just outside of town. El Bistro Francés (tel. 5352-9276, noon–4 p.m. Sat.–Sun. and holidays, $4–6) is run by the same French owners as Candelaria Lodge. It’s a good place for grilled meat dishes. Though they close at 4 p.m., you can have dinner here if you call ahead.
Getting to Raxrujá
Minibuses leave every hour for Chisec with continuing service to Cobán until 4 p.m. Buses and minibuses head north to Sayaxché with similar frequency.
