On the site of Finca Las Ilusiones, the Museo Cultura Cotzumalguapa (7 a.m.–noon and 2–4 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 7 a.m.–noon Sat., $1.50) has a variety of obsidian arrow points, ceramic pots and figurines, and several monuments on display. Among these are several Olmecoid statues and a glass fiber copy of Monument 21—the original still stands among the sugarcane fields of Finca Bilbao. The stone depicts a scene involving a ball-game player, a shaman, and a noble holding a heart.
There are also photographs of stelae moved to Berlin’s Dahlem Museum in 1880. The museum has some interpretive material and the caretaker is usually on hand to show you around.
Getting to Museo Cultura Cotzumalguapa
The museum is one kilometer east of Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa along the Pacific Coast Highway. The signed entrance is on the left just before an Esso station. The turnoff leads another half kilometer to the museum along a dirt road.
