Near the small community of La Estanzuela, is La Cueva del Gigante, or the Cave of the Giant, located a couple of kilometers above the waterfall, with vestiges of a very early Mesoamerican settlement. More information on the cave and the pools can be found through Señora Alba Luz Guevara at her house next to the soccer field, who can also help set up horseback tours, or by calling 504/783-2141. A guesthouse has been set up in the community as well.
Getting to La Cueva del Gigante
To reach La Estanzuela by car, take the highway to La Esperanza, then turn left on a dirt road after seven kilometers. After another 200 meters you will reach a sign; take a right. Follow the road by some houses, reaching the town after 2.5 kilometers. Cars can be left in the soccer field.
