Just outside of Copán Ruinas on the road to El Florido is the Enchanted Wings Butterfly House (tel. 504/651-4133, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. daily, http://hondurasbutterflyfar.tripod.com/copan.htm, US$6 adults, US$2.60 children), set up by former Peace Corps volunteer Robert Gallardo and his wife, with some 20 species of tropical butterflies in a screened-in, terraced garden at the edge of a small river, and an orchid garden across a small river.
Visitors are given a laminated butterfly identification card for self-guided tours, or you can request a guide. The deck and flagstone gardens make a relaxing place to hang out and write letters. Gallardo can arrange birding and butterfly-watching tours in the hills around Copán.
