Parque Nacional Trifinio–Montecristo, jointly administered by Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, comprises a cloud-forested mountain peak forming the boundary between the three countries. Parque Nacional Trifinio–Montecristo is accessible from the Honduran side, but only with difficulty. One local forestry officer’s advice for accessing it was, “Take a bus into El Salvador, where buses go up to within a few minutes’ walk of the peak.” Clearly, the concept of actually walking up the mountain is not big in Montecristo.
From the top, you can see the Pacific on a clear day. Pablo Rosas and his brother in Las Hojas are two reliable guides. A small cabin in the forest set up by Plan Trifinio is available for use, and Pablo has the key.
