The urban film festival debuted in 2009 to an appreciative local response. The two-day event in early September includes a short-film showcase, in addition to screenings of documentaries and webisode-based mini marathons.
Feature-length films are followed by a locally produced film both days. Fox 4 News movie critic Shawn Edwards called the debut festival “a celebration of seat-of-the-pants moviemaking,” recognizing that many of the films cover subjects that fall outside the mainstream.
The Kansas City Urban Film Festival is also designed to bring a wider audience to the Screenland Theater, a locally owned movie house that displays local and independent movies as often as it does major Hollywood blockbusters.
