For the best in locally owned boutiques, the Old Market is the place to be. City Limits (1120 1/2 Howard St., 402/345-3570, 10:30 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 10:30 a.m.–9 p.m. Fri.–Sat., 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun.) is a quirky shop filled with gifts and novelty items like pulp novel postcards, bacon mints, kitschy cards, art prints, and a surprisingly large selection of magnets.
If you’d prefer to shop for your home, Room (421 S. 11th St., 402/342-7666, www.roomomaha.com, 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon.–Sat.) is a contemporary haven filled with furniture and accessories, and is also a FLOR distributor. The shop carries several gifts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s gift store, so if you can’t make it to New York in the near future, a visit to Room might be the next best thing.
It’s Christmas year-round in Tannenbaum Christmas Store (1007 Howard St., 402/345-9627, www.otannenbaum.com, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Fri.–Sat., noon–3 p.m. Sun.), where you’ll find decorations, ornaments, and other Christmas novelties whether you’re visiting Omaha during the holidays or you like Christmas in July.
The aptly named Pulp (1026 Howard St., 402/319-7857, www.p-u-l-p.com, 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Tues.–Fri., noon–6 p.m. Sat.) is an upscale paper shop that doubles as a paper arts gallery space. Browse letterpress and other cards, decorative papers from PaperSource, and a small but impressive array of art books on a variety of subjects.
If fashion is what you seek, head to Nouvelle Eve (1102 Howard St., 402/345-4811, www.nouvelleeve.com, 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Mon., 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Tues.–Sat., noon–5 p.m. Sun.), a spacious boutique crammed with apparel, accessories, and lingerie in pretty, feminine surroundings that beg “girl’s day out!”
Owned by a former InStyle accessories editor, Trocadero (1208 1/2 Howard St., 402/934-8389, www.shoptrocadero.com, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon. and Wed., 11 a.m.–7 p.m. Thurs.–Sat., noon–5 p.m. Sun.) is a must-see filled with designer shoes, handbags, accessories, and a diverse array of New York– and Paris–inspired merchandise including vintage maps, Diptyque candles, and guidebooks.
And for more home furnishings, Niche (1112 Howard St., 402/344-4399, www.nichegifts.com, 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Mon.–Thurs., 10 a.m.–10 p.m. Fri.–Sat., noon–6 p.m. Sun.) is a well-stocked interiors haven that offers furniture and accessories artfully arranged on shelves and in, well, niches scattered throughout the boutique.
