Mexico offers a number of community tourism ventures in Maya villages, such as Muchucuxcah, throughout the Yucatán and in Chiapas. Ideally, such programs create a more attractive alternative for villagers who would otherwise have to leave the village to work in the big hotels along the coast.
If thatch roofs and pit toilets are too primitive for your taste, no hay problema. There are plenty of colonial, Caribbean, and other Mexican towns and cities perfectly situated for Maya-centered excursions, all with accommodations for every budget and long lists of day trips.
