Grosse Ile

Now part of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, Grosse Ile is a lengthy, bottle-shaped island in the Detroit River, just north of the entrance to Lake Erie.

While it’s not a huge tourist destination, there are two nearby lighthouses worth a look: the Grosse Ile North Channel Range Front Light, a white, 50-foot-tall octagonal tower lit in 1906 and deactivated in 1963, and the Detroit River Light in Lake Erie, only accessible via boat.

While the Grosse Ile Historical Society (734/675-1250) offers an annual one-day tour of the Grosse Ile lighthouse (usually in Sept.), the Detroit River light station, which is still an active navigational aid operated by the U.S. Coast Guard, can only be viewed from the outside.
