Modern Marshall, with a downtown full of lacy Victorian homes and storefronts, has become an immensely popular weekend getaway for Detroit and Chicago metro–area residents. They come to ogle the architecture, shop at a number of well-stocked (if somewhat expensive) antique stores and malls, and stay in one of the town’s historic bed-and-breakfast inns.
You’ll find most of the best shops along several blocks of Michigan Avenue and its cross streets. For antiques, try the Marshall Antique Center (119 W. Michigan Ave., 269/789-0077, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Tues.–Sat., noon–4 p.m. Sun.), which houses quality dealers in a historic home, or Keystone Architectural and General Antiques (110 E. Michigan Ave., 269/789-1355, www.keystoneantiques.com, 1–5 p.m. Wed.–Fri. and Sun., 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sat.), with an outstanding collection of vintage furniture, leaded glass, old light fixtures, hand-knotted Persian rugs, and other antique furnishings.
