Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

A short drive across the Mackinac Bridge, from the Lower to the Upper Peninsula, can feel like a journey between two very disparate countries. Despite the presence of sizable towns like St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie, the eclectic eastern half of this enormous, sparsely populated peninsula epitomizes the very definition of “wilderness,” illustrated by its rushing rivers, thunderous cascades, dramatic cliffs, deserted beaches, and vast tracts of forested terrain.

Although there are several ways to reach the U.P., most travelers utilize “Big Mac,” the only link between the northern and southern parts of Michigan.
