Having made the case for leaving the car behind, you should also know that Pictured Rocks has three auto-accessible campgrounds—Beaver Lake, Twelvemile Beach, and Hurricane River—with water and pit toilets. No reservations are accepted, and fees are $10 per night. Backcountry camping is permitted only at designated hike-in sites, mostly along the Lakeshore Trail. A $15 permit is required, good for 1–6 campers, and for any number of nights. Most sites do not have water or toilets. Camping is also available in Munising, Grand Marais, and the Lake Superior State Forest, which borders Pictured Rocks to the south.
