Located high on a ridge above Copper Harbor, the log lodge and cabins of the
Keweenaw Mountain Lodge (U.S. 41, 906/289-4403, www.atthelodge.com, $95–169 d) were built as a public works project in the 1930s. Reservations here can be tough, but shoot for a cabin rather than an uninspired motel room (added much later than the other buildings).
Meanwhile, the no-frills rooms at the King Copper Motel (Copper Harbor, 906/289-4214, www.kingcoppermotel.com, $50–100 d) come with great views of the harbor. Just a few steps from the ferry dock, this is a perfect spot for a warm shower and a real bed after a hard-core week on Isle Royale.
For a truly unforgettable experience, consider spending the night at the
Sand Hills Lighthouse Inn (5 Mile Point Rd., Ahmeek, 906/337-1744, www.sandhillslighthouseinn.com, $135–200 d), a beautifully preserved lighthouse constructed in 1919 and now serving as a year-round Victorian-style bed-and-breakfast. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this romantic spot offers eight lovely rooms, each with a roomy bed and private bathroom. Two of the chambers even have whirlpool bathtubs and a balcony overlooking Lake Superior.
The Wonderland Motel and Cabins (787 Lake Linden Ave., Laurium, 906/337-4511, $50–75 d) offers decent budget-friendly accommodations, complete with kitchens in the cabins. For such a small metropolitan area, Houghton’s lodgings run a bit on the pricey side. A good mom-and-pop operation is the Downtowner Motel (110 Shelden Ave., 906/482-4421, $69–99 d).
The Carla’s Lake Shore Motel (14258 U.S. 41, Baraga, 906/353-6256, www.carlasinn.com, $52–58 d) has clean, inexpensive rooms with a view of Keweenaw Bay, and it gets bonus points for allowing your pooch.
