If you care more about location than amenities and are coming to fish, Gates Au Sable Lodge (471 Stephan Bridge Rd., 989/348-8462, www.gateslodge.com, $90 d) has motel-style rooms with a perfect setting right on the banks of the Au Sable.
Also right on the Au Sable, Borchers Au Sable Canoe Livery with Bed & Breakfast (101 Maple St., 989/348-4921, www.canoeborchers.com, $75–95 d) invites you to slow to the pace of the river on its wraparound porch.
Hungry hunters, paddlers, and bird-watchers head to Spikes Keg O Nails (301 N. James St., 989/348-7113, www.spikes-grayling.com, 10 a.m.–1:30 a.m. Mon.–Sat., noon–1:30 a.m. Sun., $6–19) for a burger. Try the “World Famous Spikeburger,” topped with everything.
