Billings Historic District

The Billings Historic District stretches along Montana Avenue from 23rd to 26th Streets. Here, paralleling the old Northern Pacific tracks, is the heart of old Billings. Late-19th-century hotels and commercial buildings crowd in around themselves, and although the area is still filled with local color, so to speak, it’s also filled with galleries, music clubs, and interesting restaurants.

The bar and restaurant at the Rex Hotel, once frequented by Buffalo Bill Cody, is a major island of gentrification, as are the newly refurbished Northern Pacific Railway depot buildings. Other old hotels have been converted to art galleries, and others to jazz clubs and martini bars. This is one of the most diverse areas in Billings, which is otherwise a pretty conformist city.
