Those who simply can’t get enough of Helena’s historic homes might consider spending a few nights at
The Sanders Helena’s Bed and Breakfast Inn (328 N. Ewing St., 406/442-3309, www.sandersbb.com, $130), an impressive mansion built in 1875 by Montana’s first U.S. Senator. This National Registry property is amazingly well-preserved and filled with lovely furnishings, many original to the home. Even though a great deal of care is taken to preserve period authenticity, all of the seven bedrooms have private baths, telephones, and hair dryers, and the entire mansion is air-conditioned. All of the rooms have a TV tucked away for inveterate small-screen fanatics, although more in keeping with the spirit of the place are the radio alarms, each tuned to the local public radio station. Breakfasts are served in the formal dining room, a showpiece of carved oak moldings.
Just down the street is another historic inn, The Barrister B&B (416 N. Ewing St., 406/443-7330 or 800/823-1148, http://thebarristermt.tripod.com, from $114), an 1874 mansion located near St. Helena Cathedral. Its features include ornate fireplaces, antique stained-glass windows, and carved staircases. Modern niceties are also in evidence, including air-conditioning, TVs in rooms, all private baths, and a guest business center with a fax machine, copier, and wireless Internet access.
The
Best Western Great Northern Hotel (835 Great Northern Blvd., 406/457-5500 or 800/829-4047, $150) is at the center of the new Great Northern Town Center district. Rooms are very large and nicely furnished, and the hotel offers a complimentary breakfast, 24-hour business center, high-speed Internet access, an indoor pool, and fitness center. Restaurants and shopping are right out the front door.
The Red Lion Colonial Hotel (2301 Colonial Dr., 406/443-2100 or 800/422-1002, $108) is one of Helena’s finest, with indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, hot tub, free airport shuttle, restaurant, and lounge.
The nicest downtown hotel is the Park Plaza Lodge (22 N. Last Chance Gulch, 406/443-2200 or 877/774-3536, www.parkplazamt.com, $109 and up), a well-appointed, newly renovated hotel with an indoor pool.
The Days Inn (2001 Prospect Dr., 406/442-3280 or 800/325-2525, $109) is right near the Prospect exit off I-15.
Wingate by Wyndham Helena (2007 N. Oakes at 1-15 exit 193, 406/449-3000 or 800/228-1000, $112 and up) is one of Helena’s newest hotels, offering free continental breakfast, indoor pool, exercise center, and large, nicely furnished rooms.
