Divide
Trip Ideas
Floaters need to beware of a diversion dam just upstream from Divide. Here, water from the Big Hole River is pumped over the Continental Divide to Butte at a rate of five million gallons per day. In its day, the pump station was quite an engineering feat; it’s on the National Register of Historic Places.
For hikers, often overlooked is the Humbug Spires Primitive Area, a day hike into an area of geologic interest. Intense faulting has fractured granite extrusions into steep, sharp needles that resemble menhirs (prehistoric monoliths). About three miles in, the trail reaches a watershed, and there’s a good view over the spiny valley. Exit I-15 at Moose Creek Road, three miles south of Divide, and turn east.
