Rising Sun Motor Inn (406/892-2525, www.glacierparkinc.com, $107–124) near St. Mary Lake has uninspiring motel rooms and cabins (they call them “cottages,” but they’re pretty basic) with the familiar steep tariffs and lack of amenities, such as TVs, telephones, and air conditioning, of other park lodging.
At the St. Mary crossroads, the St. Mary Lodge and Resort (406/732-4431 or 800/368-3689, www.stmarylodgeandresort.com, $119–450) includes the newer and more luxurious Great Bear Lodge as well as the older St. Mary Lodge buildings and several cabins with kitchens. These places are not Glacier Park Inc. enterprises. The views don’t suffer for being just outside the park boundaries, and the accommodations are every bit as comfortable as, and a touch cheaper than, those inside the park.
