Fishing
There’s a C$9.80 fee for a seven-day Canadian National Park fishing permit. Purchase one at the park information center or administrative office if you plan to go after the trout, northern pike, or whitefish of the Waterton lakes.
Bicycling
The Townsite Trail is perfect for an easy bike ride; for more of a challenge, pedal up to the Prince of Wales Hotel for tea or out Red Rock Canyon Parkway. Pat’s (403/859-2266) rents mountain bikes at the corner of Mountain View Road and Windflower Avenue.
Golfing
The stunning and recently restored 18-hole Waterton Lakes National Park Golf Course (403/859-2114, C$36) is on the Red Rock Canyon Parkway just north of Highway 5.
Cross-Country Skiing
Although it’s not a big winter destination, there’s usually good snow around Waterton, and a couple of trails off the upper Akamina Parkway are maintained each winter for cross-country skiing. Check at the park administrative office for current trail conditions. Most lodgings and restaurants shut down for the winter.
Horseback Riding
Trail rides leave every hour on the hour from Alpine Stables (403/859-2462, www.alpinestables.com), just past the edge of town on the golf course road. Hour-long rides cost C$30; daylong rides are C$135.
